Statement of Educational Effectiveness
Sacred Heart Seminary and School of Theology (SHSST) is a Roman Catholic seminary that offers two masters degrees – a master of divinity (M.Div.) and master of arts in theology (M.A.). The educational effectiveness of these two degrees is verified by the data collected since 2010 on the employment placement or professional/educational advancement of our alumni within one year of graduation:
- 100 percent of seminarians who completed a M.Div.degree have been ordained and employed as priests.
- 94 percent of students who graduated with a M.A. degree have been employed in a field related to their degree or entered the next stage of their educational or professional development (e.g., doctoral studies, ministerial formation).
The evidence that these graduates were well trained for successful ministerial careers is evident in data collected by the Association of Theological Schools of the United States and Canada (ATS). ATS surveys graduates from accredited institutions about the quality of their educational experience. Based on these results, ATS provides comparative data from all Roman Catholic seminaries. The results indicate that SHSST graduates since 2010 rank the quality of their educational experience higher than the norm among Roman Catholic seminary graduates. As can been in Table 1, SHSST average scores in 13 of the 15 essential ministerial skills have matched or outperformed those from all Roman Catholic seminaries. Further, SHSST’s overall average of 4.2 is higher than the national average of 4.0.
