Class on American spiritual writers to start in January

Sr. Mary C. Carroll, SSSF, will offer a spring semester class on Spiritual Writers in America at Sacred Heart Seminary and School of Theology (SHSST) in Franklin. The course is open to the public.

Sr. Carroll, a lecturer in systematic theology and associate director of pastoral formation at the seminary, will use the contemplative insights of Thomas Merton, Henri Nouwen, Gerald May, M.D., and the fiction writer Flannery O’Connor.  She will also examine selections from Star Wars – the great American myth – in light of scriptural parallels and the human struggle with temptation.  Topics will include: prayer, spiritual stages of growth, authenticity, and discernment.

The class will meet on Mondays from 6:30 to 8:20 p.m. The course runs Jan. 18 through May 2.

The cost is $1,100. The course provides two credits. Non-degree students may audit the class (no credit) for $550.

To register contact Julie O’Connor, SHSST registrar, at joconnor@shsst.edu (preferred) or (414) 529-6974. The registration deadline is Jan. 13.
